AI Policy
Purpose
St George’s CE Primary School recognises that artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI tools, is increasingly present in education and wider society.
This policy sets out clear expectations for the safe, ethical and professional use of AI by staff. It ensures that AI is used in ways that:

support high-quality teaching and administration
This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, governors and contractors working on behalf of the school.

Principles for AI Use
All AI use in school must follow these core principles:
Safeguarding first
Children’s safety, dignity and privacy are non-negotiable.
Human accountability
Staff remain fully responsible for all decisions, communications and records.
Data minimisation
No identifiable personal data may be entered into AI systems.
Professional judgement
AI supports work — it does not replace professional expertise.
Transparency
Staff must be open about AI use where appropriate.
Permitted Use of AI
Staff may use approved AI tools to support:

administrative drafting

summarising anonymised information

workload reduction tasks

professional research

communication templates (non-personal)
All outputs must be checked, edited and owned by the staff member.
Prohibited Use of AI
AI must not be used verbatim or directly to create:

behaviour logs

medical records

statutory assessments

references

formal disciplinary documents

any safeguarding chronology

documents that form part of legal or statutory processes
AI may assist drafting ideas, but final documents must be written by a human professional.
Data Protection & Confidentiality
Staff must never enter:

photographs of pupils

staff personal data

internal confidential documents
All examples used in AI systems must be anonymised beyond recognition.
A breach may constitute a safeguarding and data protection incident.
Pupil Use of AI
Pupils are not permitted to independently access generative AI tools unless explicitly authorised by the Headteacher for a supervised educational activity.
Any approved pupil use must:

Monitoring & Oversight
The school will:

Misuse of AI
Misuse includes:

Misuse may result in disciplinary action under the Staff Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures.
